Kinetic abilities open this structure to the sea’s wonder, adding a playful, performative dimension. The curvature of the façade’s water-like undulations gives the structure an inherently welcoming demeanour.
Its shimmering raw aluminium finish and the direction of its scale-like surface pixels recall teeming shoals of fish. And it is designed to be dismantled and rebuilt, making it destined to reach and enhance more lives.
Giles:
“The BBC pavilion is a large-scale organic structure that we were given the creative opportunity to consider from both an artistic sculptural perspective as well as with the architectural aspiration to create a brilliantly effective commercial space for both BBC Studios and their guests.
The ‘skin’ of the structure is foremost a mechanism for controlling the visual transparency of the building, but the sculptural composition of thousands of recyclable aluminium ‘petals’ results in an object of inherent natural beauty.
The undulating front of the building opens up during the day in a unique and complex mechanical concertina, exposing visitors to open views of the Mediterranean whilst referencing the performative nature of BBC Studios output.” Giles Miller MaRCA
